Writing

Standard: W.1.8 – With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Objective:  Students will write about a small moment.

Students will learn to add details to their writing.

Students will use writing mechanics ( capital letter, period, finger space).

Pre-

Gather students on carpet to discuss today’s topic. Have students recall and summarize yesterday’s topic. ( Writing about a time in their life when they did not get something they really wanted.)  Tell students that today we will continue with our theme on writing about a small moment.

Introduce new topic by verbally listing different vegetables. (Ask students to close their eyes and create a mental picture of the items being listed, and think about what they have in common).

Tell students to get knee to knee with a partner to discuss what they thought about. Then as a class discuss and share different vegetables. Have student generate a list of different vegetables. Project the list and have students pick their favorite vegetable. Have them whisper it to their partner.

Now, have students think about why that is their favorite vegetable. Then have them take turns with their partner to share why. Tell students that after they share with their partners they will share with the class.

Begin the discussion by telling students, my favorite vegetable is carrots because they are crunchy and I can eat them with lots of different things.

Tell students; notice how I told you about my favorite vegetable in a complete sentence. (Break down the sentence for students to hear the different parts).

Use name cards to call on students to share their sentence. Once everyone has shared, tell students that they will now draw a picture of their favorite vegetable, write down their sentence and add at least one more detail.

Dismiss students by number to go back to their seats then provide the writing stem. Give students a writing stem: My favorite vegetable is ______ because……

During

Remind students to use capital letters to start each sentence, use one finger space between each word and to end with a period.Provide scaffolding and remind students to use “best kid spelling” if they can’t spell a word
