Shapes- attributes

Engage:

Play shapes song and have students gather on the carpet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=htcuPenTg38

Give each student a block from a selected group(triangle, square ,rectangle, hexagon, circle)

Tell students: today we are going to learn about different ways to sort or group blocks.

  1. What attribute block do you have?                Ask students who have a circle to go to one area of room.

  1. Students with a square go to another area.

  1. Students with a triangle go to another area

  1. Students with a rectangle go to another area

  1.  Rest of students sit on carpet(students have hexagon)

  1. Ask students sitting to show their attribute block.  Tell students this shape is a hexagon.

  1. Tell students in each group to look at their attribute block. Discuss with each other what their blocks have in common. Tell each other the name of the shape. (have each group share some attributes about their shape)

  1. Look at all the other groups… are all the shapes the same color? Are they all the same size?

Sort shapes by color

Next, have students move so that the blocks are sorted by color.

  1. If you have a red shape move to one area( show students where to go)
  2. If you have a yellow shape, move to this area.
  3. If you have a blue shape, sit down on the carpet.
  4. Ask, are all the blue shapes the same? Are there any triangles, any squares that are blue?

Ask, what attribute are we sorting by? (color)

Sort shapes by size

Next, have students with small blocks stand on the carpet.

Have students with larger blocks sit down.

What attribute did we just sort or blocks by? ( shape)

Discuss What are some ways that we can sort or group attribute blocks?

  1. Name 3 ways that we sorted or grouped our attribute blocks? (shape, color & size)( use name cards to call on students)
  2. Tell students that SHAPE, COLOR AND SIZE are ATTRIBUTES of the block
  3. Ask all students with a blue circle to stand up…. All of you fit the rule because you have a blue circle.
  4. Stand up and show me your attribute block if it it’s a red square
  5. If it’s a small
  6. If it’s a small, red triangle
  7. If it is NOT yellow
  8. If it’s NOT red
  9. If it is a pink hexagon

Wrap it Up

Call students by shape, color and/or size to return their attribute shapes and play the shapes song.
