1st Grade Shapes day 3

Review and Engage: 5 mins

Have students look around the room and identify objects that has a  shape they recognize. Partner A & B will take turn shairng an object they've identified
    and the shape it  resembles.

Next: Play 2-D  shape song to invite students to the carpet.

Tell students that today they will continue to learn about shapes. Give each student a square pre-made from straws and twist ties. Ask students to take a look at their shape and think about this question:

What’s a corner?  ( allow students to talk with the partners)

A corner is where the straight sides meet.

Next tell students that today we will learn about polygons.

Tell: Polygons have straight sides that meet at the end to form a corner.

The sides of a polygon are straight.

Tell: A circle is NOT a polygon because it has zero straight side.

Ask students: Can you think of a shape that is a polygon? turn to your partner and tell them the shape.  Today, we are going to make different polygons.

Direct Instruction

5 minutes

Give each student 8 straws and 8 twist-ties to start.

Today we are going to make some polygons using straws and twist-ties .( show them the straws and twist-ties.

The straws are NOT all the same size.( some are small, some are a little bigger and some are much bigger)

First, I will show you how to use your straws and twist-ties to make polygons.

Then you will get a chance to make some polygons.

And finally, you will get to share what you’ve made with your partner and the class.

Model making a polygon using the straws… follow directions in the book, p. 640

Independent/Partnering

10 minutes

Have students make polygons with the straws and twist-ties. After 10 minutes have class share their different shapes and discuss.

Sharing/ Whole Class

5 minutes discuss their construction

Point at a few of the similar shapes… note if they are the same size, what they have in common/similarities, how are they different from some of the other shapes?

Have them try to tug on the corners of their shapes without bending or removing a side to see if they can make a new polygon. Hold up any new shape…

Show page 205 in Math masters, pg. 205

Explain to students why the polygons are polygons and why the others are not ( Because their ends do not meet OR because there are gaps between the sides.

Closure:

Next, have students work on the My Shape Book and add what they've learned about polygons.
