1st Grade Shapes day 2

Shapes Lesson 2                                                                                                                               Standard: Geometry

Objectives: (1) Count the sides and corners on plane shapes (2) Identify and describe plane shapes (3) Compare plane shapes

Materials: Students need page 140, 141 in Everyday Math; pattern blocks( triangle, square, circle, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid, hexagon), pattern block template

Stage 1: 5 minutes

Play shapes song to start Math

Review

Play song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=htcuPenTg38

While song plays: Have helpers pass out a shape to each student, include some trapezoid and rhombus. ( make sure partners A and B has a different shape from each other)

Yesterday we talked about attributes. Can anyone tell me what some attributes of blocks are? (shape, color, size)

Use projector to show the shapes talked about yesterday. Ask students to name the attributes( use name cards to call on students) STOP on powerpoint

Stage 2: 30 minutes

  • So today we’re going to continue to learn about attributes and we’re also going to learn about the number of sides that each shape has. Does everyone has a shape?
  • Now have students talk to their partner about their shape. (1) Tell partner the name of your shape. (2) Name an attribute of your shape (could be the color, the size, the shape) (3) Tell your partner how many sides your shape has.
  • Now ask students to raise their hand if their shape has “0” sides. What’s the name your shape. (circle… has no sides because it’s a curve)
  • Raise your hand if your shape has 3 sides. Name it.
  • Raise your hand if your shape has 4 sides.
  • Raise your hand if your shape has more than 4 sides.
  •  Different shapes have different number of sides.
  •                 So let’s look at how many side our shapes have AND how many corners.
  • Does anyone know what a “corner” is?
  • A corner is a point where two sides meet. Let’s take a look.

 Play powerpoint.

  • Have the girls count the sides.
  • Have the boys count the corners.

Ask: How many sides? How many corners?

So when we count the corners, we need to count where the sides meet.

  • Let’s look at another shape: play power point  from triangle

Count the Sides

Count the corners

Ask: Do we have the same number of corners as we have sides?

  • Ok  Let’s look at another one: Show circle

How many sides? How many corners? Why aren’t there any corners?

  • Have students talk with partner about number of sides on the rhombus and the trapezoid then say it out loud

ANY QUESTIONS?

  • Lets compare two of our shapes. Let’s look at the So we’ve learned that NOT all shapes have the same number of sides

AND we learn that the number of corners a shape has = to the number of sides.

  • EACH of these shapes is a POLYGON.

A POLYGON IS A SHAPE THAT HAS ALL STRAIGHT SIDES THAT TOUCHES ONLY AT THEIR ENDPOINTS

  • The word POLY( write it on the board) = MANY

GON = angle. A CORNER IS ALSO AN ANGLE.

  • ANY QUESTIONS?

Stage 3: Independent Work   10minutes

  • ASK THE PEOPLE THAT PASSED OUT THE SHAPESTO COLLECT THEM.
  • PAPER HELPER, GIVE EACH PERSON A MATH JOURNAL BOOK. PLAY SHAPE SONG
  • CHOOSE TWO OTHERS TO PASS OUT THE TEMPLATES
  • TELL STUDENTS TO TURN TO PAGE 140 AND WRITE IT ON THE BOARD
  • Page 140 in Everyday Math. Draw each shape with the templates then together draw the shapes that have exactly four sides.
